Abstract

Background & aim: Universal access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to achieve the highest level of quality of life is facing obstacles. The attitudes and behaviors of health service providers, which are derived from the social norms around them, are one of the barriers mentioned in the literature. This review aimed to find out which of the SRH services are more affected by the social norms governing the attitude and behavior of healthcare providers.
Methods:  This narrative review was conducted based on the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA). The MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid, and EBSCO databases were searched to identify relevant English-language articles published up to December 2022. A qualitative synthesis was carried out on the 45 eligible articles.
Results: Providing pregnancy and childbirth services for women at both ends of the reproductive age spectrum and women with parity higher than society'snorm, providing sexual counseling services for elderly women, providing family planning services and SRH services for women undergoing induced abortion and women with disabilities may be impaired by the attitude and behavior of health providers, which are derived from social norms regarding childbearing age, number of children, condemnation of elective abortion, extramarital and premarital sex and sexual activity of elderly and disabled people
Conclusion: By identifying the reproductive health services that are affected by the social norms of health providers,  will help to put more emphasis on using a rights-based approach in the design and implementation of health programs.
