Abstract
Background & aim: Sexual satisfaction is an important component of women's health and quality of life, influenced by biological and psychosocial factors. Although Squill oil is traditionally believed to enhance sexual arousal, evidence for its effectiveness is limited; therefore, this study examined the effect of Squill oil on sexual satisfaction among women of reproductive age.
Methods: This double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 60 women aged 15–45 years who were referred to the Women's Clinic of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Participants were randomly assigned to either the Squill oil group, in which participants applied 2–3 drops of Squill oil topically to the clitoral area five minutes before intercourse, 1–3 times weekly for four weeks, or the placebo group. Sexual satisfaction was assessed using the Larson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire before and four weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 21) using the chi-square, independent t-test, Mann–Whitney U, and Wilcoxon tests.
Results: The mean preintervention sexual satisfaction score was 40.0 ± 0.4 in the intervention group and 41.9 ± 4.1 in the control group, with no statistically significant difference between groups. Four weeks after the intervention, the mean score increased by 37.4 ± 10.4 points in the intervention group and 7.1 ± 10.3 in the control group. A statistically significant difference was seen between the two groups after the intervention (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Squill oil may improve sexual satisfaction among women of reproductive age. Further robust clinical trials are recommended.
