Sexual Satisfaction during Pregnancy and its Related Factors: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Background & aim: Considering the importance of sexual satisfaction in women's life and its physiological changes during pregnancy, which is the basis of sexual disorders, the present study was designed with the aim to investigate sexual satisfaction in pregnant women and its related factors.
Methods: The present study was carried out in 2023 through designing the study question and search in the databases of SID, PubMed, Magiran, Irandoc, Science Direct, Scopus and Google scholar search engine with keywords such as “related factors”, “sexual satisfaction”  “couples”, “pregnant women” and their Persian equivalents and then the related studies were identified from 2010 to 2023 [the last thirteen years]. The studies were selected after screening the title, abstract and full text. Among 1281 articles, finally 13 studies were left to announce the results. The quality screening of studies was done by Strobe checklist.  Then the findings were classified.
Results: The results of the study were divided into four categories. Individual factors include age, education and knowledge of sex, gestational age, duration of marriage, number and pattern of sex during pregnancy and before pregnancy. Socio-economic factors include financial status, residence and occupation. Psychological factors include sexual disorders with psychological basis and history of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorder. Physical-medical factors include the number of pregnancies and births, gestational age, history of death and abortion, willingness or unwillingness to have a current pregnancy, and the woman's physical health status.
Conclusion: Sexual satisfaction during pregnancy is related to many factors that knowing them can improve driving factors.
