Abstract

Introduction: Episiotomy pain in the first days after birth can affect the quality of life, mental health of the mother, and the interaction with her baby and taking care of him/her. Apricot kernel oil, through anti-inflammatory properties and phenolic compounds, can effectively reduce pain. Therefore, the present study assessed the effect of apricot kernel oil cream on the severity of episiotomy pain in primiparous women.
Methods: In a triple-blind randomized clinical trial study, 70 primiparous women referred to Hashminejad Hospital in Mashhad, were randomly allocated into two groups: apricot kernel oil cream and placebo cream. 2 hours after episiotomy repair, the intervention was started by applying 2 cm of cream (medicine or placebo) on the site of episiotomy and was repeated every 12 hours for 10 days. The pain intensity was evaluated with McGill's questionnaire within the first 24 hours after delivery, on the fifth day, and one of the days 10 to 14 after delivery. Data was analyzed by SPSS (21) software and Chi-square, Fisher, t-test, and Mann-Whitney statistical tests were used at the significance level of p < 0.05
Findings: The mean and standard deviation of the total pain intensity score are on the fifth day in the drug group (12/24 ± 3/56) and in the placebo group (15/57 ± 5/76) and on the tenth day in the drug group (5/17 ± 2/01) and in the placebo group (8/47 ± 3/91).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this research, apricot kernel oil can reduce episiotomy wound pain
