Abstract

Background & aims: Considering the importance of sleep in fertility rate, the present study aimed to investigate the factors related to sleep quality in women undergoing infertility treatment.
Methods: This systematic review study was conducted by formulating a study question and searching databases such as SID, PubMed, Magiran, IranDoc, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Google Scholar search engine with following keywords "assisted reproductive technology", "psychological factors" "Infertility factors", "Sleep quality" and "Female". Relevant studies published between 2013 and 2024 were identified. After screening the titles, abstracts and full texts of 544 articles, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria.
Results: A total of 12 articles were included in this systematic review. Two main categories were developed: 1) psychological factors, and 2) infertility factors. In the category of psychological factors, an inverse relationship was found between stress, anxiety, and depression levels and sleep quality, while a direct relationship was observed between mental abilities and sleep quality. Regarding infertility-related factors (second category), five studies highlighted variables such as type of infertility (primary), cause of infertility (female), infertility duration (more than three years), type of treatment (invasive), and specific co-conditions (e.g. PCOS, irregular menstruation and abnormalities) were associated with poor sleep quality in women.
Conclusion: The results indicate that both psychological factors and infertility-related factors can influence the sleep quality of infertile women significantly.
