Abstract

Background & aim: Endometriosis affects different aspects of women's life. Many women with endometriosis do not have the social support of family and friends. Family-centered empowerment care is one of the care methods for chronic diseases. However, its effects on receiving social support for suffering women have not been investigated yet. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of education based on the family-centered empowerment model on the perceived social support in women with endometriosis.
Methods: It is a randomized clinical trial on 64 women with endometriosis in 2022-2023. Sampling was done by the available method among patients in the endometriosis clinic of Imam Reza Hospital (AS) in Mashhad. The social support questionnaire of Sherbon Stewart was completed as a pre-test. The intervention group received 5 education sessions and one 45-60 minute final assessment session based on the family-centered empowerment model over two weeks. Immediately and 1.5 months after the intervention, the social support questionnaire was completed again. Data analysis was done using SPSS software. p value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Before the intervention, the mean and standard deviation of the total score of social support in the intervention group was 57.16 ± 16.3 and in the control group was 58.9 ± 19.01 which was not significant between the two groups (p = 0.684). After the intervention, the total social support score was 67.1 ± 11.08 in the intervention group and 57.63 ± 16.31 in the control group which was a significant difference in the two groups (p = 0.008).
Conclusion: The family-centered empowerment model is effective on the social support of endometriosis women.
