Abstract
Background: An interstitial ectopic pregnancy is the genesis of an ectopic pregnancy in the uterine portion of the fallopian tube. The condition is unusual and creates difficulties for both clinical and radiological diagnosis. The present case report describes an uncommon occurrence of interstitial ectopic pregnancy diagnosed by pelvic ultrasound with additional aid in the management by 3D imaging.
Case presentation: A 38-year-old female, G4A3, with two months of amenorrhoea presented to the obstetrics outpatient department with diffuse lower quadrant abdominal pain for 3 days. Pelvic ultrasonography revealed an empty uterine cavity and an eccentrically placed fundic gestational sac of size 29 x 21mm with a foetal pole corresponding to 7 weeks gestational age in the medial end of the right fallopian tube. On explorative laparotomy, an unruptured gestational sac of size 3x2 cm was found in the interstitial part of the tube. Right salpingectomy with right uterine cornuostomy was done.
Conclusions: An interstitial ectopic pregnancy is a rare and potentially fatal disorder. Timely ultrasound detection is of utmost significance in further managing the cases.
