Abstract
Background & aim: Health-seeking behaviors related to cancer screening reflect actions taken to prevent and detect disease such as breast cancer and cervical cancer. This study amimed to comparethese behaviors and their associated factors among medical and non-medical sciences faculty members at GUILAN University.
Methods:A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Guilan university from 2020 to 2021 among 160 faculty members, including 80 from medical sciences and 80 from non-medical science, selected through simple random sampling. A validated researcher-designed questionnaire, covering personal and social characteristics, cervical cancer screening, and mammography was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistical and chi-square tests were used, with p<0.05 considering statistical significance.
Results: Mammography uptake was 36.25% among medical science faculty and 48.75% among non-medical science faculty (p=0.11). Pap smear uptake was 73.75% among medical science faculty and 100% among non-medical science faculty (p<0.001). In the medical science group, mammography uptake was significanty associated with education (p=0.005) and work experience (p<0.001), but not age (p=0.058). In the non-medical science group, it was significantly associated only with education (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Non-medical faculty members demonstrated higher uptake of Pap smear and mammography screening than their medical counterparts, particularly for cervical cancer screening. Targeted educational programs may help improve cancer screening behaviors among university faculty members.
